In 1973, Congress passed Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibits discrimination on the basis of physical or mental disability. Section 504 applies to all agencies that receive federal funds, including public schools.
What is a 504 Plan?
504 plans help outline specific accommodations, supports, or services designed to meet the individual needs of students with disabilities as adequately as the needs of nondisabled students are met. These disabilities may affect students’ ability to access the curriculum or educational environment. Section 504 plans are developed and implemented by a team of individuals who are knowledgeable about the individual student, the results of their evaluation, and services available. These plans are managed by students’ school counselors on an annual basis.
For more information about Section 504 plans, please contact the Director of Student Services or your student’s school principal.
