Dear CSD Families,
We have recently learned of a TikTok challenge that may take place on Friday, December 17. It is our understanding that the challenge encourages students to make threats of shootings, bomb threats and violence against schools.
These threats do not target any specific school but may impact schools across the U.S., including ours. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is aware of the challenge and we are working with them directly. As a result, you may see an increased security presence at our schools.
Our goal is to transparently share information with the community, especially when it involves school safety and security. While we understand that this event is only a rumor, we also know that social media is often influential. It is vital to remain watchful when it involves these types of threats and challenges.
What can you do?
Please take time to talk to your children about the pressures of social media and the potential consequences of engaging in this type of behavior. This is also a good time to stress the importance of sharing information regarding the safety of our school community with administration or a trusted adult immediately – if you see something, say something.
We take threats to our schools very seriously. If a student is found to be engaging in any of these behaviors, we will follow district policies which could result in school disciplinary action as well as possible law enforcement involvement.
If you learn of anything alarming on social media or elsewhere, please contact your school principal to share your concerns immediately.
Should the TikTok challenge directly impact any of our schools, we will respond accordingly and work with the LCSO to ensure the safety and security of our students and staff. Parents, guardians, and caregivers would be notified of any concerns and impact on our schools immediately.
While we know these challenges exist, we also know that the vast majority of our students do the right thing daily and are proud of their integrity and responsibility. Thank you for partnering with us to provide a safe, positive learning environment for our students.
