Scholarships can be based upon academic merit, financial need, or other criteria outlined by the awarding organization, school, college, or university. Unlike loans, scholarships do not need to be repaid.<\/p>\n<p>Scholarships are offered by many local, regional, and national organizations. Most colleges and universities also have scholarship programs. You should never pay for a scholarship, and if in doubt go to<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.ftc.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; width=&#8221;20%&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||0px||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||0px||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_3_text_color=&#8221;#C1272A&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3>Laying the Groundwork for College and Scholarships<\/h3>\n<p>There are several things that you can do <em>now<\/em>\u00a0to make yourself a strong competitor for college admission\u00a0and scholarships in the future.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Academic Record<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll want to prove yourself a\u00a0strong student academically, with a good academic record for all four years in high school.\u00a0 A good academic record is measured in three ways:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0Your Grade Point Average\u00a0(GPA)\u00a0\u2014 You do not have to get all As, but is is important that your academic record show a\u00a0<em>consistent effort<\/em>\u00a0on your part.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0The Kinds of Courses You Take\u00a0\u2014 Some students intentionally take easier courses to get higher grades, thinking their GPA number is the only deciding factor in college and scholarship determinations.\u00a0 The people who review college and scholarship applications look very carefully at the strength of your coursework, especially during your junior and senior years.<\/p>\n<p>3) College Entrance Exams\u00a0\u2014 High SAT or ACT scores will put you at the top of college and scholarship committee searches.\u00a0 The best preparation for these exams is to have applied your best effort in English and math classes each year of high school.\u00a0 Lots of reading will help with the vocabulary sections of the tests. \u00a0If you want to be even more prepared, come into the Career Center to find out about practice opportunities for each type of exam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>School Activity Record<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just about every scholarship and college application asks you to list and discuss the activities you have been involved in during high school.\u00a0 Being involved in such things as student government, clubs, athletics, musical performing groups, etc. are highly valued by college and scholarship selection committees.\u00a0\u00a0 Providing information about your other interests lets these committees know that you are a well-rounded person.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community Activity Record<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, you will want to be involved in Community Activities.\u00a0 People who decide on college applicants and who provide money for another person\u2019s education expect that the recipients will in turn make contributions back to society.\u00a0\u00a0Providing proof that you are willing to help other people is a good way to show you believe this is important as well. This also gives you an opportunity to search possible career choices within organizations\/ companies that offer volunteer\/internship work . These are 12 ways you can get involved with your community. Take a look through your closet or storage space to find those dusty items that you\u2019ve outgrown or just don\u2019t use anymore.Give it to your local\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodwill.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Goodwill,<\/a>\u00a0or women\u2019s shelter.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Pick up some non-perishables to donate to your local food bank.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Bring new or lightly used toys and stuffed animals to a children\u2019s hospital.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Send a care package to deployed troops, veterans, or wounded soldiers.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Become a volunteer mentor or tutor at your local schools.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Plant trees for Arbor Day.<\/li>\n<li>Volunteer to run\/walk for an event, like\u00a0Race for the Cure\u00a0or\u00a0Relay for Life.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Volunteer on Thanksgiving Day . Serve a meal, in your home or in a local shelter, to someone who needs it.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Host a food packaging event at your school to help hungry children with nationwide organizations like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/outreachprogram.org\/have-fun-and-feed-the-hungry-with-the-outreach-mini-pack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Outreach<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Intern at a possible future \u00a0career.<\/li>\n<li>Volunteer at a crisis line. Many organizations have specific programs for teens and their peers, where you\u2019ll be trained to listen actively as a teen crisis counselor<\/li>\n<li>Offer to nanny or baby-sit for free to a family in need. You can contact a local women\u2019s shelter, department of social services, or church to volunteer your services<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.6&#8243;
